Icy Dock MB122SKGF-1B and MB722SKGF-B Drive Enclosures
July 31, 2006

Conclusion:

The Icy Dock MB122 and MB722 drive enclosures measure up to the demand of anyone who needs a hot swappable drive or even an extra location for installing a hard drive. The MB722 is a little more geared towards gamers and modders who like flashy colorful lights, while the MB122 is more standard looking with the plain neon blue light LCD screen and ambient blue light.

It is nice to have the ability to see the temperature of your hard drive, although I do not know how accurate they are given where the sensor is located in the enclosure. Both enclosures will sound an audible alarm if the temperature rises above the set temperature, which provides an extra sense of security for maintaining healthy components.

The coolest thing about the MB122 is that it can be swapped with an external USB enclosure (MB452). There are many external USB drives available but they lack the speed of a full SATA drive. The use of an internal enclosure as a backup drive that can also be used on any computer with a USB connection is great especially if you are migrating data to a laptop, for instance.

A search for Icy Dock on PriceGrabber does not get any hits for the MB122 or MB722, but on ComputerHQ.com they list the MB122 for just under $50.

Given the performance, style, and SATA II speed capabilities, I award the Icy Dock MB122SKGF-1B and MB722SKGF-B Drive Enclosures a final rating of "Highly Recommended."

Pros:

» Hot swappable
» SATA II support
» Clear, easily readable LCD

Cons:

» None
