Ultra Products XVS Modular 600W ATX Power Supply
October 27, 2006

Conclusion:

Ultra Products has done it again with another good power supply. I have used many of their power supplies over the years and have not had any issues with them. While they do not offer the features of a more expensive power supply (such as Active PFC), it does provide the features that the average computer user needs.

During testing of the Ultra Products XVS Modular 600W ATX Power Supply I did not encounter any serious issues. It is very quiet (especially once inside a closed case), and was indistinguishable over the other fans in the system. The supplied cables were long enough to reach everywhere in a Thermaltake Eureka full tower server case, and there aren't many cases bigger than that.

The biggest complaint I have with this power supply is the lack of connectors. While it is not specifically designed for dual PCI-Express video cards, it does have enough power to allow you to run two of them. The problem is that it only provides a single PCI-Express power connection. The 700W version includes a second PCI-Express power cable and I feel the 600W should as well. I also question the PCI-Express cable and connection as there is no specific place to plug it in, and it looks like there is only one four pin Molex connector supplying power to the PCI-Express. I did not have any issues, with this, however I still question whether the card was receiving enough power. In addition, two SATA connectors isn't really enough, and I had to use a Molex to SATA converter.

A search of PriceGrabber returned three online retailers with this power supply for sale. The price ranges from $69.99 to $89.99, and this is not a bad price for a silent, modular, and stable power supply .

Given the performance and overall features I award the Ultra Products X-Connect V-Series 600W power supply the rating of "Recommended".

Pros:

» Quiet
» Modular
» FlexForce cables

Cons:

» Not enough SATA connections
» One PCI-E power connections
» No LED 120mm fan (personal preference)
