Axonix:

Axonix is a name I was unfamiliar with prior to the show, and they had quite an impressive 'server' setup for streaming audio/video content. Their MediaMax systems are intended to archive CDs and DVDs (including HD DVDs), and allow for simple play back in any room of your house.

The image below shows a rack of Axonix MediaServers, which can be configured in a variety of capacities, with modular MediaDrives that can even be added later as your media library grows. The systems can implement a variety of RAID arrays (including RAID 5 and RAID 6) to make sure you never lose a movie, and a MediaMax system ships with just about everything but the big screen TV; including the 15" color "Admin LCD", keyboard, and mouse.


The image below shows the MediaMax interface on an HDTV, where the user can browse their collection via DVD cover art. Part of the package from Axonix includes a lifetime connection to their movie and music cover art collection, so keeping your menus populated should be a snap. With systems ranging from $3500 (non-HD DVD) to $5000 (HD DVD), value added features might be expected!


At the present time there isn't a Blu-ray option in the MediaMax line up, but they hope to be able to offer one soon.

Conclusion:

While the Home Entertainment Show may appeal to those with an ear and budget for high end amplifiers and speakers, there wasn't much to see in the areas I set to explore. While the show's private demonstration room format is quite enjoyable, the rooms seemed to be filled with few of the "products ranging from loudspeakers, turntables, HDTV, home theater systems, computers, gaming consoles, imaging products and much more." While there were plenty of loudspeakers (and amplifiers), the balance of the list wasn't particularly well represented.


As the personal computer becomes more powerful and popular as a home theater component, I mistakenly assumed they might have a greater presence at such a show. There were some interesting items to see, but nothing new or earth shaking in the realm of computers for the home theater.

If you are in the New York City area and fancy yourself an audiophile with minimal interest in computers, the show runs through Sunday, May 13, 2007. The cost of admission will make for a lovely Mother's Day present.
