Ultra Products 2GB Hydra MP3 Player
March 02, 2007

Conclusion:

While I might prefer a more robust type of player (such as the Archos 604), there are times that a larger player is just too much. This is where the Ultra Products Hydra is a perfect choice. Whether you are out running, biking, sitting by the pool, or working in the hot summer sun; a compact, solid state, and splash resistant player like this will come in very handy. In addition to its convenience, the sound produced by the Hydra will satisfy all types of listeners.

While no MP3 player is perfect, the Ultra Products Hydra is pretty good There are a few faults, and the main one may be its lack of support for any form of DRM (no DRM support can be seen as both a good and a bad thing, depending on the end user). Second, there is no support for playlists, and with 2GB of music onboard being able to set a few playlists would be quite useful. The biggest fault/complaint I have with the Hydra is that it does not include covers for the ports. It is splash proof, and while that does not mean it should be submerged, even a small amount of water into the USB port could potentially cause issues.

A search of PriceGrabber shows the Ultra Products 2GB Hydra MP3 Player selling for $69.99 and up at a few online retailers, and you can find it even cheaper with rebates from places like Tiger Direct. For a 2GB MP3 player that reproduces good sound and includes a FM tuner, this is a great price!

While the performance, features, and price gives this player high marks, it does not break any new ground as a portable music player. I award the Ultra Products 2GB Hydra MP3 Player the rating of "Recommended".

Pros:

» Drag and drop file addition
» Splash resistant
» Price
» No DRM is nice for those who have their own files

Cons:

» No DRM is a hinderance to subscribers to Napster, Urge, etc
» No playlist support
» Lack of port covers

Special thanks to Ultra Products for providing the Ultra Products 2GB Hydra MP3 Player to Bigbruin.com for review!
