Roadmaster USA Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame
April 13, 2007

Roadmaster USA is a manufacturer of after-market equipment, focused mainly on home and mobile audio devices. They have a wide variety of interesting items in their product catalog, and we were first introduced to them last year with our review of their VRFM8 MP3 FM Modulator.

This time around we have a product from Roadmaster USA to review which may be even more novel; their Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame Model RLPF100. Unlike your typical license plate frame that shows a static message, this frame has a fairly large array of LEDs that allows you display up to five personalized messages that can use up to 120 characters each.

The promotional image above shows a quick glimpse of the Roadmaster USA Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame, and after checking out some of the published features and specifications we will take a closer look at the unit provided for review.

Features and Specifications:

» Show instant messages on your license plate from your car!
» Easy to use remote control
» Easy to install
» Shows LED messages in 3 speeds
» Save your favorite messages
» Save up to 5 messages
» Program up to 120 characters per message
» Hardware included
» Power: 12VDC, 400mA

The Basics:

The Roadmaster USA Scrolling Digital License Plate Frame is sold in the blister package shown below. It provides a good look at the product and details many of the key features in English and Spanish. One detail of significance is that this frame is intended "For Off-Road Use Only", implying that it may not be street legal and is best suited for show cars. But, the same disclaimer can be found on tinted license plate covers, and I see dozens of them on the road anyway.

Inside the package there is the license plate frame, heavy duty mounting bolts, and the wireless remote control. The wiring for the frame's power is clearly labeled for positive and negative 12V, and the length of the wire should be sufficient to reach a usable 12V source.
