Dacos Technologies Rapsody 2.5
January 16, 2007

Conclusion:

The Dacos Technologies Rapsody 2.5" Multimedia Player is an excellent fit for my digital multimedia device needs, and I really do like it. It is very easy to transfer media via USB or OTG, and the size and simplicity make it extremely portable.

As far as the features are concerned, they did a good job incorporating support for different file types, but could have made it a little more robust. For images you can only use JPEG, which is a lossy format. I would like to see support for BMP, GIF, and maybe PNG. On the music file types I think the majority of users will not have any issues with unsupported file types (but FLAC support would be awesome). On the supported video file types, someone without knowledge about CODECs might have issues with video files being incompatible with the Rapsody. If the right CODEC and options are wrong then the file will not be able to be viewed with the player. It is helpful to use a program like Gspot to view which CODEC and options a video file has.

Geeks.com currently offers the Rapsody RSH-250 for $129.99, which might be a little on the high side as compared to other similar devices, but I haven't seen another multimedia player with this many supported file types. You could pick up a 2.5" 40-60GB hard drive from Geeks.com at the same time and the total cost would be about $175... much less than a HTPC.

The Dacos Technologies Rapsody 2.5" Multimedia Player (Model RSH-250) earns the "Highly Recommended" award for its ease of use, portability, and support for most media file types.

Pros:

» All-in-one multimedia player
» Easy to use
» Portable
» Lots of playback features

Cons:

» Only supports JPEG images
» No support for WMV
» Some freezes with unsupported file types
