Thermalright Ultima-90 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
January 29, 2008

The Basics:

In the following images you see the Thermalright Ultima-90 Heatpipe CPU Cooler removed from the packaging. There are a total of six heatpipes arranged in a tight array to take heat from the base of the cooler up to the fins. As with most Thermalright products, the various materials of construction (generally Copper and Aluminum) all have the same shiny silver finish.

Taking a look at the above right image reveals that three of the six heatpipes have a small gap between them and the base. I hope the gaps don't hurt the cooling performance, and are perhaps just found at the edge due to the radius of the heatpipe's bend.

The Thermalright Ultima-90 CPU Cooler has the ends of the six heatpipes exploding out of the top. There are also threaded holes next to each heatpipe termination, but I am not sure what they are for and the instructions don't mention them. Two more small holes are found at the top and bottom on either side of the cooler. These are used for the fan wire clips to hold a 90mm or 120mm fan to the heatsink. Looking from the bottom of the cooler you can see the heatpipes extending up into the heatsink's fins.

In the below left image you can see some machine marks on the base of the heatsink. In the below right image you can see a US quarter next to the base of the Ultima-90, in order to better represent the finish of the base. If the base was lapped, you would see a mirror reflection, and you might improve the interface between the processor and the cooler.

Accessories:

The box of accessories has a lot of stuff included. From the top left to bottom right in the below right image there are 120mm fan wire clips, 90mm fan wire clips, multi-CPU backplate, a syringe of thermal paste, a bag with AM2 mounting hardware, a bag with mounting bracket and other hardware, and a bag for the Intel LGA 775 mounting hardware.

The instruction manual has two sides, one is for AMD AM2 motherboards, while the other side is for Intel LGA 775 motherboards.
