Figured I'd start a fresh thread now... (no more speculation required)

Specifications for the initial setup:

ASUS P5KC (Intel P35) Motherboard
Intel e6850 (3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache) C0re2Duo CPU
Stock Intel CPU Cooler!
2GB OCZ System Elite 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 Memory
Western Digital 750GB SATA-II Hard Drive
PCP@C 750W Silencer PSU
Cooler Master iTower 930 Case

The cooler and memory are NOT for performance, but I wanted to get up and running and are doing fine for initial use.

Just ran memory tests so far, as that is what I want to focus on since it is the weakest link.

Initial setup had the memory at 4-4-4-13 and 2.0V. No other voltages or timings changed. FSB at 1333MHz (4x333), multiplier at 9.

First big stop has the memory at 5-5-5-15 and 2.0V, CPU multiplier dropped to 8 and FSB now at 1500MHz (4x375)

Bottom line is the CPU is at the same speed (3.0 GHz), with no increase in voltage or heat... under 40C.

Everest Scores: Read / Write / Copy / Latency

9x333MHZ (800MHz Memory): 7475 / 6091 / 6177 / 65.6
8x375MHZ (900MHz Memory): 7977 / 6793 / 6596 / 63.4

Nice choices on the mobo, cpu and psu. That system will go far. As I'm sure you know, 3.2Ghz (8x400) is propably easily attainable even with stock cooling and voltage.

My Asus P5K has the Q6600 in it, so I haven't ever been able to really push the boards fsb, but with a G0 C2D, you should have many hours of testing ahead of you and I'm guessing you will be quite happy with the results. Grin

OK, still running the stock cooler and default voltages on the CPU.

Put the multiplier on 8 and cranked the FSB to 1600 MHz (4x400)! Memory is now back at 800 MHz DDR2, 4-4-4-13 2.0V.

Here are some CPU test results from Everest Ultimate 2006

Test :: 3.0GHz (9x333) | 3.2GHz (8x400)

CPU Queen :: 6048 | 6487
FPU Julia :: 11388 | 12179

Not much stress testing yet, but eventually. Keeping a close eye on temps, which haven't left the low 30s.

Did you leave the voltage on auto in the bios? Just wondering, because cpu-z seems to show it at 1.392v when running at 3.2Ghz and 1.36V when running at 3.0Ghz. This could indicate that it is set to auto in the bios and is being adjusted automatically (not usually a good thing when overclocking). If this is the case, you might want to try setting it to 1.35v manually with voltage damper enabled, it might lower your temps slightly when at 3.2Ghz.

Good eye... I'll have to check. I've been flipping so many switches, who knows. Even right now, I look at CPU-Z while on a different set of memory, but back at 3.0GHz... Core Voltage = 1.32V.

I am going to need a new cooler... I like the CPU duct on this case, so it means I can't use a cooler much taller than the stock Intel unit. I guess about 2.5" tall.

Any ideas? A Tt Orb? Something from Zalman?

I am running 8x 400MHz FSB just fine and never go above 50C (according to Core Temp)... But I would prefer something more substantial doing the cooling.

And as a note on the voltage setting acruxksa brought up... I set the BIOS to 1.375V and enabled the damper, so now CPU-Z and the BIOS both report it as actually being 1.35V.

Just an update on this thread, even though not much is new... It has been running solid at 9x400, 1.32Vcore, DDR3 1600MHz ever since I reviewed that Crucial Ballistix memory.

Still with the stock cooler. It runs F@H just about 24 hours a day and never goes over 50C according to CoreTemp.

Still want to get a new cooler, but haven't see a low profile one worth pursuing. I had that Zalman one a year or so ago, but gave it to someone on here because it stunk like bad cabbie BO... Wonder if I should look for a deodorized version of that! Laughing

I upgraded to the most recent BIOS on the P5KC and the overclocking page changed alot!

I wasn't sure what to do with some of the extra options, and then some things seemed to have been renamed.

Anyway, overclocking doesn't seem as easy. I can't stay stable at the same speeds and settings that I used to be able to.

Vcore seems to be one of the problems. I eventually found the new place to limit the droop, but I have to set the voltage up to like 1.425 in order to now see a 1.320 in CPU Z.

System used to run fine at 8 or 9 x400, 1600MHz memory, 1.320 Vcore, 1.8Vmem, 1.4V on the northbridge... Now it still does, for a while. Then it will just reboot, or a game will dump out to windows. Worst is that sometimes Internet Explorer dumps out to Windows. Laughing

I may just roll the BIOS back instead of fighting for stability with this new one.
