I was thinking the same thing, Very cool if it was removable and used that MS Sideshow technology. Snap it off and use it as a tablet PC and/or a controller for the HTPC. As of right now it is just a second monitor.

Most bang for the buck video card is the nvidia 9600GT. If you are stuck on ATI, then I cannot help you there.

I bought an 8800GT, 5600+, a cheap gigabyte MB, a TB of hard drives, and a Coolermaster 280 case.

Working good so far.

I'm not sure what OS you were planning on running for the HTPC, but if you decide to go the linux route(MythTV is really nice), or even have the possibility of eventually going the linux route, you might want to stick with an NVidia gpu over an ATI one. ATI is starting to become better under *nix, but NVidia is still a lot better and more supported.

Like usual though, as far as the other pieces, you're going to get what you pay for. (Which is quite a lot of bang for your buck now, in my opinion) I'm personally an Intel fan now for CPUs, their c2d and quad core line have pretty consistently been out-benchmarking AMD.

EDIT- whoops, looks like i'm a little late on the advice. Smile Glad to see you went with an nvidia card.
