Wow! You passed some time programming a microcontroller. Tried a bit to start PICmicro last year, I just got bored and nothing happened since. I might try again this summer with better equipment.

A commercial version would cost a lot... Most commercial units are made with a low production cost. His has lots of good parts. (Not that expensive to build yourself tho)

About the emergency shutdown, is it holding the button 4 seconds or clicking?
4 secs. would be safer for the system, but less for your data.
Just a click is shutting down Windows correctly, but sometimes, it's crashing...

It is doing both.

In case of "emergency shutdown" the fan control first try to shut down the pc ( by simply clicking the power button ) if this fails then the fan control is holding the power button for more than 4 sec. . So the computer is always secure switched off.

There are features never seen on any commercial unit.
