keep an eye on woot.com. They have some decent and inexpensive GPS stuff every so often. You just need to be patient.

I've had a few different GPS's ...

Garmin StreetPilot I3 :- Decent software, quick startup & good maps, but let down by weird controls and small screen ... also the fact that it looks like a plasticy mid 70's computer terminal doesn't help.

HP iPAQ RX1955 with TomTom 5.xx & OEM Antenna Kit :- Startup nice and quick, software ok-ish, maps truly awful. You'd get half way down a street, and it would just drop off. Crap.

Magellan RM300 :- Decent Touch Display, good maps, easy to use software, a bit naff looking, but comes with sturdy windshield boom arm. Downside, got no batteries so has to be mains or vehicle powered.
