Anyone using Grisoft AVG Free with Vista? I have been, but just uninstalled it. Whenever it wanted to pop up a confirmation that an update was received or that a scan was complete, Vista's User Control, or whatever that annoying double/triple confirmation crap is called would tangle it up resulting in an error message and a white screen.
I know it is Vista's fault, but I am trying other things now.
I got 1 year of 3-license McAfee Security Center free for having a Scott Trade account, and so far so good on that. _________________

I've used AVG Free with Vista Business since April with no problems; turn off the UAC (User Account Control) by doing this:
Start/Settings/Control Panel/User Accounts/Turn User Account Control On or Off.
I run the Administrative account itself and not an account with Admin rights.
And here's how to access the true Admin account under Vista; read it carefully as it has a 'gotcha' in it:

That works fine under Vista but you will still have to shut off the UAC or you'll get the same problems as AVG.

The timing of e-mails is sometimes funny
Just got this e-mail today: Windows Vista UAC an oil slick for energy firm _________________ I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. - Oath of office of the President of the United States

Yeah - I was waiting to better understand UAC more before turning it off completely... But OMFG is it annoying.
You wanna run a simple benchmark? Or empty the recycle bin? Tell the computer over and over again like it was stupid... _________________

You can safely shut off the UAC; it's intentions are good but it's definitely a PITA. Afew years back, a program called Prevx tried to do the same thing blocking changes without authorization. It too was a pain..... |
