Testing:

Testing consisted of running the test system through two memory-centric benchmarks, one 'gaming' benchmark, and a bit of game play for good measure. Both sets of OCZ Technology PC2 5400 DDR2 memory were installed in the test system separately and run through the same tests in two configurations: default speed and at overclocked speed.

SiSoft Sandra 2005 Memory Benchmark:

SiSoft Sandra 2005's suite of benchmarks includes one that offers a pair of results related to memory performance. The values are provided in units of MB/s, and higher values are better. As you can see from the data below, there was a slight edge in test scores while using the Platinum series PC2 5400. All scores were very close to each other, but overclocking does help the Platinum series widen the margin over the Gold series.


Overall, although the Platinum series did do better than the Gold series, the differences in scores is fairly insignificant in SiSoft Sandra at these speeds.

Everest Memory Benchmark:

The Everest 2.20 Memory Benchmark is similar to the SiSoft Sandra test, but provides three sets of results: memory read speed (in MB/s), memory write speed (in MB/s), and memory latency (in ns). Higher values are desirable for memory read and memory write speeds, while lower values are desirable for latency. The results follow the trend established by the SiSoft Sandra test; both sets score well and the Platinum just beats out the Gold.


Once again overclocking helps widen the gap, but the scores are all very close. Of interest is that although overclocking helped to reduce latency on the Platinum series, it actually increased the latency of the Gold series. The test was repeated several times to confirm the findings, and they were duplicated consistently.
