http://www.gruntville.com/howtos/side_panel_power_mod.php

I was thinking of trying to find a way to power my fan, but make it easier for when I take the side panel off. Also easier so i don't have to fudge around with either a motherboard header of a Molex. I never had a 'safe' idea of how to do this, but then I saw this on Gruntville. It's pretty schweet of a mod, when I have the time/patience I'm going to give it a shot on my setup.

I have also seen somewhere about using a magnetic reed switch or something like it for powering the side fans. I'll look for the link.
